November 15-16, 2008 Long Beach Airport

The first “airport” in Long Beach was actually the beach! Takeoffs and landings were best accomplished at low tide in strange-looking, fabric-covered machines. Long Beach aviation history includes names like Earl Daugherty, Frank Champion, Donald Douglas, Douglas“Wrong-Way” Corrigan, Howard Hughes, Barbara London, and Art Scholl among many others.

In 2008, the Airport will celebrate its 85th Anniversary from when the Long Beach City Council dedicated the initial acreage in 1923 to establish the first municipal airport in Southern California Completed in 1941, the existing Terminal Building, with its Streamline Moderne art deco style, was deemed a cultural heritage landmark in 1990.

Celebrating years of contributing to the economy of Long Beach through commercial aircraft manufacturing and associated businesses, Long Beach Airport today is the home of the Boeing C-17, the last U.S.-made transport. While the McDonnell-Douglas properties are changing, so are the needs of the flying public. Today, there are over 50 air carrier flights per day (66 authorized) that pass through the airport serving 3 million passengers per year.
